About The Instructor

Mary Beverly, B.A., M.A.Ed., Ed.S.

Ms. Mary Beverly holds a B.A. in Political Science and an M.A.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction, both from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. In addition to having completed graduate hours in Political Science from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA and Regent University in Virginia Beach, VA, she also holds an Ed.S. in Curriculum and Instruction from Liberty University. Her professional affiliations include membership in the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators, where she currently serves on the board of the Alpha Zeta chapter. Ms. Beverly has extensive experience teaching AP U.S. Government, World History, African American History, and Dual Enrollment Education courses. She has served on various VDOE History and Social Science committees. In addition to her instructor position with the Governor's School, Ms. Beverly has held an adjunct instructor position with Virginia Highlands Community College. For her work teaching the U.S. Constitution, in 2018 she was selected as the John Marshall Foundation High School Teacher of the Year. Furthermore, Ms. Beverly was named Washington County Teacher of the Year in 2021.

INSTRUCTOR'S COURSE OFFERINGS

U.S. Government, PLS 135/PLS 136

U.S. Government provides an understanding of federal, state, and local government. The course consists of U.S. Government and Politics (PLS 135) and State and Local Government and Politics (PLS 136).

U.S. Government and Politics covers the political structure, processes, institutions, and policy making of the US national government. Focuses on the three branches of government, their interrelationships, and how they shape policy. Addresses federalism; civil liberties and civil rights; political socialization and participation; public opinion, the media; interest groups; political parties; elections; and policy making.

State and Local Government and Politics covers structure, powers, and functions of state and local government in the United States as related to federalism; constitutionalism; elections; powers of legislative, executive, and judicial powers of state and local government; state-local-federal relations; fiscal matters; metropolitan issues; and policy issues, like health, education, criminal justice and welfare.
