About The Instructor

Matt Prater, B.S., M.A., M.F.A., Ph.D.

Dr. Matt Prater holds a B.S. in English from Radford University, an M.A. in English from Appalachian State University, an M.F.A. in creative writing from Virginia Tech. He also holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Studies, with a concentration in Cultures, Languages, and Literatures, from Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Prater's research focuses on the relationship between constructions of ideas of Appalachian regional identity and both national and international culture and politics. In addition to his teaching experiences at Appalachian State Universoty, Virginia Tech, and Florida Atlantic University, Dr. Prater has served as an adjunct instructor at Bluefield College, Emory & Henry College, and King University, as well as as a substitute teacher and assistant football coach for Smyth County Public Schools. He also actively writes and publishes poems and other forms of creative writing. Dr. Prater’s writing has appeared in Appalachian Journal, Appalachian Heritage, Appalachian Places, Cordite Poetry Review, Crannóg, Cutleaf, Hampden-Sydney Poetry Review, Hawai’i Pacific Review, The Hollins Critic, The Honest Ulsterman, The Missouri Review, The Moth, Munyori Literary Journal, New Ohio Review, Painted Bride Quarterly, The Southern Poetry Anthology, Vol. IX: Virginia, and Still: The Journal, and other publications. His academic writing has appeared in Creative Literature and Culture Web.

INSTRUCTOR'S COURSE OFFERINGS

College Composition, ENG 111/ENG 112

Through critical thinking and critical reading of literary texts (novels, plays, poems, and short stories from the sixteenth century to the present) students will come to understand how writers use language and form to create or enhance meaning in his/her works. Our literary analysis will look through the lenses of style and structure, rhetorical strategies, diction, figurative language, imagery, selection of detail, language and syntax.

Dual Enrollment College Composition will give students a learning experience equivalent to a typical undergrad introduction to literature class. The course will be a learning experience equivalent to a typical undergrad introduction to literature class.
