Elisabeth Sowdon, Class of 2001, is now Dr. Elisabeth Sowdon McElroy [Congratulations Elisabeth!]. She graduated from Elon Univerity with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy and is now married. Boqiu Lu, Class of 2001, is currently living in New York City. Boqiu's e-mail address is now blu@alumni.uchicago.edu. [February 28, 2008]
David Crabtree, Class of 2007, was accepted as an Honors Scholar at East Tennessee State University. He is majoring in biology in his preparation for medical school. He plans to enter the PreMed-Med Program at ETSU with eventual study at the Quillen College of Medicine. [March 2, 2007]
Elizabeth Jones, Class of 2006, is attending Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio. She graduated from John S. Battle with a 4.0 GPA, which earned her a full scholarship to Cedarville University. [Great job Elizabeth!] She is majoring in Social Work with a double minor in history and psychology. She is a member of Psi Kappa Theta (psychology society) and also volunteers at the Montgomery County Detention Home. [October 29, 2006]
In her update, Ms. Jones also had a few comments about her Governor's School experience:
"Taking world history with Mr. Hagy has more than prepared me for classes at the highly ranked private university I am now attending. I was especially pleased when my Humanities professors covered Byzantium since I already knew most of the material [from my Governor's School studies]. I wish to thank Mr. Hagy for his excellent teaching. I want to also thank the A. Linwood Holton Governor's School for providing me with a wonderful academic experience for my senior year."
Jeremy Aaron Bise, Class of 2001, is attending Virginia Tech and working full time for U.S. Cellular during school breaks. Shai Cullop, Class of 2002, graduated from Radford in May 2006 with a double major in history and social sciences, concentrations in history and teaching, and a minor in Appalachian Studies. [Great work Shai!] With a Bachelor of Science and teaching certificate earned through Shai's undergraduate work at Radford, Shai is working on a Masters in American Literature, also at Radford. Jesse Call, Class of 2004, is attending Concord University in Athens, West Virginia where he is majoring in political science and history. At the time of the update, this Pocahontas High School graduate was writing for The Concordian, the Concord University student newspaper, working in the Public Relations/Marketing Office, is involved in community service and volunteerism through the Bonner Scholars Program, and has become active in the university's Student Government Association. Jesse, who attended the Governor's School in 2003 and 2004, included a few remarks about their Governor's School experience:
"Thanks to the A. Linwood Holton Governor's School, I received 14 hours of transfer credit, which along with my AP credit has knocked out my freshman year and helped me on my way to one of my majors in history. ALHGS helped prepare me for all the challenges and adventures that university life has brought me, and I want to thank them for being so dedicated.
I encourage alumni to check out Concord, and I encourage high schoolers [sic] to enroll in the ALHGS! It's worth it!"
Adam Childers, Class of 2001, graduated in May 2004 from Virginia Tech with a BS in biochemistry and a double major (BA) in chemistry. At the time of this update this Richlands High School graduate was attending Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk in the M.D. program "and adjusting well." Mr. Childers is shown at right during the August 2004 White Coat Ceremony at Eastern Virginia Medical School. [September 23, 2004]
"I wanted to ... let you know what an excellent experience it [ALHGS] was in preparing me for my undergraduate work and now my professional school work. All the courses and class work experiences that the [Governor's School] offered were an outstanding indication of university classes."
